In 2013 a poetry group on Long Island, NY decided to host a poetry reading to gather food for a local food bank. The poets who attended like the idea so much that it was turned it into an annual event. As the tradition continued, the idea spread to other poetry groups and states. And it keeps growing with each passing year! Is there a poem in this story? Here's a clip about a program in South Bend, IN that uses food rescued from school programs to create weekend meals for students who may otherwise go without. The organization, CULTIVATE, is heading the effort. Thanks to Tamara Murrell of Forestville, CA for sharing the clip.

MSAC's support will be used to, among other things, build out Poetry X Hunger's social media platform and presence. While hunger-focused poetry from near and far will be presented, poems by Maryland poets will be prominently showcased. Young poets will also be engaged to help strengthen Poetry X Hunger's social media presence. More details will follow, but for now, this is just to say Thanks and YES! to the good folks at the MSAC. Issue 38 (May, 2019) of The Wild Word, a literary e-journal edited by Kusi Okamura, is themed on Hunger. For poems that are showcased in the issue, visit https://thewildword.com/
This is our very first digital post in the new digital space dedicated to Poetry against Hunger.
We are proud to have received the support of the Maryland State Arts Council to develop this idea. We hope this creative outlet will inspire you and help you learn about the historic accounts of hunger! |
