What is hunger?

What is Hunger? Webster’s Dictionary defines hunger as “a craving or urgent need for food or a specific nutrient,” or “an uneasy sensation occasioned by the lack of food.”
Bread for the World’s website contains another definition of hunger – what it is and what causes it.
Following is the first paragraph from their Website:

People who suffer chronic hunger don’t have the option of eating when they are hungry. They do not get enough calories, essential nutrients, or both. People who are hungry have an ongoing problem with getting food to eat. They have a primary need — how to feed themselves and their children today and tomorrow. They have little energy for anything else.

What causes hunger?

A number of factors can cause people to suffer hunger.  Natural causes such a drought, floods, earthquakes, pests can reduce the amount of plant and animal food that’s available.  Just as critically, conflicts, wars, and political action or inaction can lead to collateral or deliberate breakdown in food availability.  Poverty often leads to hunger because food is unaffordable, especially nutritious food. And, lack of access to a variety of wholesome foods may also cause hunger along with malnutrition.
