Sustainable Community Initiative
for Empowerment

Sustainable Community Initiative for Empowerment (SCINE), in partnership with Seed Programs International (SPI) and Poetry X Hunger, implements the Growetry project—a school gardening and poetry initiative in Kampala, Uganda. This project offers students hands-on agricultural education while promoting food security and improved nutrition. By integrating poetry into the program, children creatively express their experiences and reflect on the importance of farming. The combination not only enhances literacy and artistic skills but also strengthens their connection to local food systems, making learning both inspiring and practical. The initiative supports teachers and students from eight schools in organizing Urban Farmers Clubs, where students improve their gardening spaces and write poems about growing food and reducing hunger. The winning school for the best-recited poem receives an award of scholastic materials.
